Melt Free Summer Makeup Routine

I always have a rough time transitioning my makeup into summer. My skin is oily (you can read about my skincare routine and favorites here and here) and the summer sun and heat always make anything on my face seem to melt right off and just look awful! I know I’m not the only one that goes through this! I’ve searched high and low for some great summer makeup staples and think I’ve finally found some winners! So here are the items I currently have in my summer makeup routine, broken down into steps.

Step 1: Primer

I honestly don’t know what I ever did without primer! I’ve been rotating between some primers for a while now but my current favorite for a flawless face is the Benefit Porefessional. I usually concentrate this just on the places where I have a lot of texture and it really helps to create a smooth base for me.

Step 2: Tinted Moisturizer

So in the summer months I don’t use a foundation. I find that every foundation that I try doesn’t stay as long as I’d like in the heat- no matter what I do. And honestly I don’t dress up a ton in the summer to justify a full face of makeup. I’ve been using the Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer for months now and it’s amazing! The coverage is sheer, but now that my skin in clearing up I don’t need a lot of extra coverage everyday (which I LOVE). But the best part is that it has SPF 20 which is amazing in this summer sunshine.

Step 3: Concealer

Because sometimes a girl just needs a little extra coverage, right?! I love the Naked Skin concealer from Urban Decay. It works for a lighter makeup look (like this one) or for when I’m going full glam. For my lighter looks I conceal under my eyes, the redness around my nose and any small blemishes I might have lingering on my face. Blending this stuff out with a sponge or beauty blender (I like this one) helps it to go on evenly.

Step 4: Bronzer and Highlight

I love a good bronzer to help add that glow to my skin and help to even everything out. Lately I’ve been using the Hoola Matte Bronzer from Benefit for a good neutral bronzer that doesn’t look to orange on my skin. I add this to my cheekbones, hairline and sometimes under my chin/neck to blend everything in. Pro Budget tip- I’ve been using the mini version and it’s lasted forever! I’ve been using it all summer and haven’t even hit pan yet. They also have a Hoola Light for fairer skin tones.

Next up is highlighter, because who doesn’t love a little summer glow!? I don’t go crazy with this, but I will use it at the top of my cheeks and to brighten up under my eyebrow. I got this Smashbox Spotlight Palette in Pearl and I’ve been obsessed with it! It has 3 different highlighting shades in it that you can mix and match. Lately I’ve been using the lightest tone as my highlight and the middle shade as an eyeshadow to brighten up my eye look.

Finishing Touches

And after all that makeup I always set it with my Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray to help to hold it in place. My eye routine changes depending on the day and occasion, but lately I’ve just been doing my brows and applying a little mascara. Nothing fancy, just enough to pull myself together and make me look acceptable to go out in public.
